Real Life Proof Godly Behavior Matters

Real Life Proof that Godly Behavior Matters

When you Do The Right Thing it benefits a community. We now have real life proof that godly behavior matters.

Godly behavior benefits a community!

When you place others before self, results are tangible.

When you place the well being of others before your own, the community benefits.

When you place honoring others rather than yourself, blessings and favor can be seen … literally.

As I related in my article “Voting This Election“, Jeremiah 29:7 includes what seems to be this promise:

  • With peace in the community, YOU will have peace
  • The welfare of the community will be YOUR welfare
  • When the community thrives, YOU will thrive
  • It’s future includes YOUR future
  • If it prospers, YOU will prosper
  • Security in the community will encompass YOUR security
  • If things go well for the community, they will go well for YOU!

This real life results of this promise from Scripture was actually reported in the news. Yes, a New York Times article detailed how doing the right thing (which we know is a godly thing) had tangible benefits for the entire community! Here is how the article begins:

A new study by economists at the University of Kansas has found that counties in the state where residents are obliged to wear masks in public have seen about half as many new coronavirus infections as counties that do not have a mask mandate in force.

The article continues, stating that communities that required wearing face masks to PROTECT OTHERS (placing others before self) reported

  1. fewer cases
  2. fewer hospitalizations
  3. fewer deaths (so godly behavior actually is saving lives in these communities):

The study by the university’s Institute for Policy & Social Research is part of a countrywide trend, experts said. Localities that impose mask mandates often see fewer cases, fewer hospitalizations, fewer deaths or lower test-positivity rates than nearby localities that do not.

The healthcare community is begging usbegging YOU… do the right thing. Wear a face mask whenever you are around others.  Benefits and blessings will result, as evidenced in Kansas.

UPDATE (October 28, 2020): Washington Post reports similar results in Tennessee … that researchers at Vanderbilt University report twice as many hospitalizations in areas that do not have a face mask requirement. [this correlates with the Kansas study]

Don’t Forget What Jesus Did

Jesus Said, “Love God First; Love Others Before Self”

Forget Fighting for something Jesus didn’t fight for.

Jesus didn’t fight against abortion (murder), though he did stand up against the Pharisees and their hypocrisy.

Forget Focusing on something Jesus didn’t focus on.

Jesus summed up his focus in SEVEN WORDS:

  1. Love God First
  2. Love Others Before Self

Forget Failing to accept the truth if it is not something you want to hear!

Wearing a face mask PROTECTS OTHERS (you may be infected and don’t know it). Since we are to place others before ourselves, it is godly to wear a face mask when around others, so Do The Right Thing! And it also is scientifically accurate as well.

Remember focusing on truth

Remember passing respect onto others

Homeless Jesus Statue

Homeless Jesus Stature outside St. Barnabas church in Ohio

That is not a real person trying to sleep and stay warm on that bench outside St. Barnabas church (and yes, people HAVE contacted authorities requesting help for the person). It is a statue. A very realistic statue. It is ART with a MESSAGE! And I thank CNN for recognizing the importance of it (Refer to the CNN article: A realistic ‘Homeless Jesus’ statue sparks conversation).

Most Americans would instantly recognize the message that homelessness is a problem in our country (not just an “issue”). Christians should further recognize that the message is very Biblical. The group that funded that statue, the non-profit  Community West Foundation, acknowledged that by saying:

The statue is an embodiment of the Gospel passage in Matthew 25:40 — “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

And the CNN article brought a question to my mind! What if just HALF of the nearly $11 Billion (with a B) spent in political campaigns was funneled to help the homeless in our country? I ask this as a serious question! What could $5,500,000,000 do? Yes that is the correct number of zeros. (Refer to CNBC Article) [UPDATE: the political campaign funds total has been upped to nearly 14 Billion now per NY Times article]

And my follow up question (in case you thought my first question was too easy) is this: could using half of their campaign money to help the homeless and hungry actually benefit a candidate’s campaign more than those postcards we get in the mail or the TV ads we ignore?

And my final question (and some of you might actually know the answer) is this: has any political campaign actually done this already?

Anti-Life is the new 3rd option to Pro-Life or Pro-Choice

Please watch this Nicolle Wallace video segment with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist health policy analyst Laurie Garrett along with Doctor Vin Gupta and Jason Johnson before reading this article. (Nicolle was White House Communications Director during the presidency of George W. Bush and in his 2004 re-election campaign as well as a senior advisor for John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign)

After watching that short video clip, you next should take just a couple minutes to read a 5 page short story from 1976 (yes 44 years ago) by my favorite author, Isaac Asimov titled, “The Winnowing”.

Read Online: The Winnowing

It is with a sad heart that I now recognize the third position that the Republican candidate has embraced as reported by many reputable news sources (including Pulitzer Prize winning sources). This new position goes beyond merely Pro-Life or Pro-Choice and is clearly Anti-Life with a proposal that will result in over 1 MILLION (yes that is the correct word) deaths and 200,000,000 COVID infections (yes that is the right number of zeros). Do not be confused by the polite phrases “focused protection” and “compassionate approach” … if implemented it is a death sentence to over a million more Americans and a painful illness to 200 million more Americans and many will have lasting debilitating effects the rest of their lives! The White House embraces the Great Barrington Declaration as The Hill reports:

“The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk,” the [Great Barrington] declaration reads. “We call this Focused Protection.”

How can purposely allowing 1 million more deaths and 150-200 million MORE people to be infected be considered compassionate? I think a better term is “anti-life” (I just made up that term, but perhaps others will also apply the term to what the Republican candidate is proposing)!  This policy will clearly mark the Republican party as Anti-Life, which goes far far beyond Pro-Choice.

The Republican candidate says this: “Don’t be afraid of Covid.”

The Great Barrington Declaration is not a scientific document. As critics readily point out, it presents no data. It has no footnotes, few specific suggestions for how to implement the societal segregation and, unlike most scientific arguments, does not discuss potential objections to the proposal. Source: Washington Post article:

Proposal to hasten herd immunity to the coronavirus grabs White House attention but appalls top scientists

.

SIDE NOTE: The online document [Great Barrington Declaration] claims that thousands of doctors and scientists have signed it, as well as hundreds of thousands of people in the general public. Britain’s Sky News reported last week that some of the names are transparently fake, such as “Dr. Johnny Bananas” and “Dr. Person Fakename.

While there are many many news articles about this, including Pulitzer Prize winning sources, perhaps the article by Time Magazine is a good choice for you to read, if you are only going to read one news report. Time is reputable and they published a fairly comprehensive report:

The White House Wants to Achieve Herd Immunity By Letting the Virus Rip. That is Dangerous and Inhumane.

.

Here are some snippets from the article:

From a public health and ethical viewpoint, the fact that the Great Barrington Declaration is now the Trump administration’s official policy is deeply troubling.

and

No pandemic has ever been controlled by deliberately letting the infection spread unchecked in the hope that people become immune. We must do all we can to protect people from COVID-19, not let them get infected…

and

A strategy of going for herd immunity from natural infection would lead to a massive death toll—estimates suggests the result could be somewhere between 1 million to 2.5 million dead Americans. The U.S. health system would buckle under the weight of so many hospitalizations and ICU admissions. With the health system pushed to breaking point by the virus, services for diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease would be disrupted, which could lead to an increase in deaths from these other conditions. And among those who are infected and survive, research suggests that 10% of people at any age may develop a long-term illness, called long-COVID, that appears to affect the lungs, heart, brain and joints, and can be highly debilitating.

And what is absolutely the worst aspect of this “strategy” is that it WON’T WORK! There are many reputable sources for this and I plan on updating this article with the reasons why it won’t work, but I wanted to get this info out NOW while I work on the update!

Do The Right Thing (Others Before Self)

Health Workers PLEAD for Public Cooperation

I don’t think that Jesus gave us the option of sitting at a distance and doing nothing. Jesus didn’t want us to be silent and say NOTHING. Jesus wanted us to say something! And more than that, Jesus wanted us to DO SOMETHING. Jesus wants us to DO THE RIGHT THING!

Christianity revolves around two commands that Jesus said encompass everything! (Matthew 22:36-40)

First … Love God!

Second … Love Others!

Loving others means placing their needs and well-being before our own. In Romans 12:10 Paul even went so far as to imply that we should look at it as a contest to see which of us can best place the needs of others before our own! Of course, Paul was writing in Greek, and his words need to be translated into English. There are a variety of ways of phrasing what Paul said … here are a few translations (which ALL are saying the same thing but with different words):

  • Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. (ESV)
  • Be devoted to one another with mutual love, showing eagerness in honoring one another. (NET)
  • Live in true devotion to one another, loving each other as sisters and brothers. Be first to honor others by putting them first. (Voice)
  • Love each other like brothers and sisters. Give each other more honor than you want for yourselves. (NCV)
  • Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. (NLT)

As Christians, we should not need others to PLEAD with us to do the right thing, as the health workers and medical community are pleading for public cooperation (which they say is as simple as wearing a face mask whenever around others and adhering to the 6 foot social distancing recommendation).  Months ago, our churches should have imprinted face masks for all their congregation to wear when out in the public. Face masks that say “I place your well being before my own“.  Face masks that say, “Others Before Self” or even using the funky urban style messaging: “Others B4 Self“.

Our health workers are PLEADING with us … will any church step up and get masks for EVERYONE in their church to wear … face masks that boldly say WHY they are wearing them? Why? Because they are CHRISTIAN … and that’s what a Christian does … place others well-being before their own (yes, it is proven that face masks work to protect OTHERS – see source => PBS scientific explanation video).  Why not advance the kingdom by advancing the well-being of those around us? Don’t spout off a Bible verse at others while not wearing a mask. Instead, silently serve others and let the face mask speak for itself!

Others Before Self

There are many many many places that can make a custom imprinted face mask for you and your church. I will offer one company as an example, only because I have used their services in the past and found them to be excellent. The company’s name is “4Imprint”. You can call them at 877-446-7746 or visit their website to see their custom imprint face masks available … some even with 24 hour rush shipping! Click => Custom Imprinted Facemasks

Ask your church if they would be willing to give out “Christian! Others Before Self” face masks … and if so please let me know – I WANT ONE TOO! Face masks are NOT a political statement! They are a Christian statement placing others before self!

UPDATE: A few hours after I posted this article, it seemed that I should rethink having the word “Christian” on the face mask.  Perhaps back at the end of February or first week of March it may have been OK. But now our country has seen too much of how various people are behaving that it may come off as arrogant or hypocritical.  So … just having a face mask that says Others Before Self is sufficient, because if anyone  asks you about it, you then have the opportunity to explain why!

Evangelical Leaders Urge Pro-Life Evangelicals to Vote for Biden

Ronald J. Sider is president emeritus of Evangelicals for Social Action

The election this year is important. While I can’t and won’t tell you who to vote for, I can and will provide information that you should consider while contemplating your vote! This information now includes a statement just released!

Prominent evangelical leaders have just released a statement urging pro-life evangelicals to vote for Joe Biden. They state: “We want to be clear. We mourn abortion and are committed to work to reduce the number of abortions. But three things are important.” and end with, “For these reasons, we believe that on balance, Joe Biden’s policies are more consistent with the biblically shaped ethic of life than those of Donald Trump. Therefore, even as we continue to urge different policies on abortion, we urge evangelicals to elect Joe Biden as president.” The signers include John Huffman, board chair emeritus of Christianity Today; Richard Foster, best-selling author of Celebration of Discipline; Jerushah Duford, Billy Graham’s granddaughter; Brenda Salter McNeil, author, speaker and long-time I VCF leader; John Perkins, founder of the Christian Community Development Association; the two authors of this piece; and a number of former presidents of evangelical universities.

The Christian Voting Command

Jesus said that all Scriptures could be summed up in just two commands, which can clearly be stated in just four words:

  1. Love God
  2. Love Others

When deciding who to vote for, just look at the two main candidates and decide which one of them lives in a way that matches up with these two greatest commands that Jesus gave us (Matthew 22:36-40). Also remember that Scriptures also tell us that it does not matter what someone [a candidate] accomplishes … if they do it…

  1. Without love they are just a NOISY GONG
  2. Without love they are NOTHING
  3. Without love they gain NOTHING

If that (ref: 1Corinthians 13:1-3) is to simple, let’s expand it. If love is the key, just what is love?  Scriptures make it perfectly clear just what love is (ref: 1Corinthians 13:4-7). So you can make a checklist for the candidates on the ballot by using the definition pulled directly from Scriptures and then color in the heart for each line for the candidate who most displays that requirement. The checklist below is mine, yours may have different hearts colored in.

REP DEM Requirement for Love
Is kind
Rejoices in the truth
Is not puffed up
Does not behave rudely
Is not self-serving
Does not dishonor others
Keeps no record of being wronged
Is not easily angered
Is not glad about injustice
Always protects
Always trusts
Always hopes

Now, just vote for the candidate with the most colored in hearts.

Remember that Jesus focused on many issues, not just one. So make sure you do the same. No one issue is ultimately important over all others. (ref: Jesus and Abortion).

Voting this Election

Our Country Needs Compassion, Empathy and Unity – Vote for it!

God seems to want us to be PART of our city, our state, our country.  PART of it.  He didn’t ask us to control it nor to take it over. Look at what God was saying in the book of Jeremiah. HIS people were captives in another country! God did not ask them to revolt, rebel or riot. He did not even ask them to criticize the laws in the country or try to change those laws. Here, see what God is saying:

“The Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says to all those he sent into exile to Babylon from Jerusalem, ‘Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters. Find wives for your sons and allow your daughters to get married so that they too can have sons and daughters. Grow in number; do not dwindle away. Work to see that the city where I sent you as exiles enjoys peace and prosperity. Pray to the Lord for it. For as it prospers you will prosper.’

“For the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says, ‘Do not let the prophets among you or those who claim to be able to predict the future by divination deceive you. And do not pay any attention to the dreams that you are encouraging them to dream. (Jeremiah 29:4-8 NET)

So, we settle down, build our homes, marry and have children who marry and have our grandchildren. Then we are to work (and PRAY) to see that the city enjoys peace and prosperity. If it prospers, we prosper with it. And be warned… don’t be deceived, and don’t encourage others to tell you about dreams that YOU want to hear. So, now we are ready to work for peace and prosperity in our country (not work to change it to match our morals and standards… those we maintain ourselves).

(1) God is not a Democrat.  God isn’t a Republican either! He is not even for the Constitution Party.

This is clear from Joshua’s encounter just outside of Jericho (and we KNOW that God was planning on taking down it’s walls). But God did not talk to Joshua about THAT DARN ENEMY … He wanted to refocus Joshua on God (who just happens to have his own army).

13 When Joshua was near the town of Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and demanded, “Are you friend or foe?

14 Neither one,” he replied. “I am the commander of the Lord’s army.”

At this, Joshua fell with his face to the ground in reverence. “I am at your command,” Joshua said. “What do you want your servant to do?” (Joshua 5:13-14 NLT)

So, no matter how much we want God to be on OUR side, the fact is that God is on HIS OWN side and we need to ditch our animosity for this or that political party.  This is amplified by Jesus, who came to earth for God’s kingdom! Jesus did not come to be a political leader or to lead the people in fighting to change the laws of the land. We know that this is true. Even his followers were often baffled about it. They wondered why Jesus didn’t rise up and get rid of those Romans! Instead Jesus submitted to them and ALLOWED them to crucify him. And Jesus is our example, our role model. If you need further biblical information about this, here are two good articles:

  1. Life, Hope & Truth article: “It may come as a surprise to many, but Jesus Christ did not involve Himself with the politics of His day.” (source: Article by a pastor in our Southern States)
  2. Blue Letter Bible article: “when we look at the public ministry of Jesus, we find that he avoided any involvement in the current political issues of his day.” (source: Article by the author of over twenty books on the subject of evidences for the Christian faith)

(2) Jesus had a many issues focus (but did get upset with “hypocrites”)

JESUS SAID MANY THINGS (nearly 2,000 statements – source: What Jesus Said Matters). He did confirm many things that we are to NOT be doing, just as he confirmed many things that we SHOULD be doing. He did not have a ONE ISSUE focus. He did not rage about how terrible murder was again and again and again. The two times that he did speak of it, he combined it with other issues of equal concern. We may not like it, but that’s what he did – source: Jesus and Abortion (aka Murder). But there were some things that he DID speak about again and again and again and again.  One was hypocrisy. Did you ever wonder why Jesus did not mince words when confronted by hypocrites?  God must really not like us to say one thing and do another!  Thus this point 2 seems directly related to the previous point 1 … if we tell God that we agree with him that HE has the army and the other party is NOT our foe … then, think about it, if we are ACTING like there is only one godly party, are we being hypocrites ourselves? (and, boy, I have to try hard with this myself). Here are just a two of the 40 statements Jesus made about hypocrites:

[Jesus speaking to the leaders:] You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. (Matthew 15:7-8 NLT)

and

[Jesus speaking to the leaders] “Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You give a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, yet you neglect what is more important in the law — justice, mercy, and faithfulness! You should have done these things without neglecting the others. (Matthew 23:23 NET)

Yes, this applies directly to what the Republican Presidential candidate is doing. Four years ago the Republican party REFUSED to fill a vacated Supreme Court seat because it was too close to the election … and at that time it was over 37 weeks until the election. They did this because they did not want the Democrats to choose the Supreme Court Justice! Now … right now as I write this … just 5 weeks before the election when people have already begun to cast their ballots (via absentee) the same Republican party wants to fill the new vacant Supreme Court seat QUICKLY. And in the 1st Presidential debate the Republican candidate actually admitted that he was doing this so that the new judge would be there in case there were election issues to be decided! Across newspapers, magazines and websites the Republican party Senators have been called hypocrites, just as Jesus called the leaders in his time hypocrites! (Summary of what each Republican Senator had to say about filling a Supreme Court seat during an election year – PBS Source) So, something extremely biblical is unfolding before our eyes as stated in Judges 17:6 and Judges 21:25everyone did whatever seemed right in his own eyes. [yeah, this is not godly, but it is Biblical in that Scriptures went out of the way to point out this failing]. And Jesus did not mince words about the leaders of his time either! He called them Hypocrites! Yes, Jesus said, “You hypocrites!” (Matthew 23:27 and Matthew 15:7)

The Washington Post (with six Pulitzer Prize winners) had this September 19, 2020 report: “The last 70 years, a Supreme Court justice was not confirmed in the final year of a president’s term,” preached the future Fox host [Laura Ingraham], then a frequent guest on “Hannity.” She fretted that it “doesn’t matter” to left-leaning partisans. This was lofty-sounding but wrong: To pick just one of many examples to the contrary, the Democratic-controlled Senate unanimously confirmed President Ronald Reagan’s nomination of Anthony M. Kennedy in early 1988, an election year.

(3) As Christians we should be living by this.

It should be our walk as we walk the talk. But we should not expect others who are not Christians to be living by OUR rules! We should not be imposing our Christianity upon non-Christians as a point of the LAW of the land (source: United States Constitution First Amendment on the Congress website). Yes, we can hope that through our words and actions (if we are walking the talk) they might see that Christianity is a good thing and might ask us about it.  So, maybe that is why Jesus was so riled up over hypocrisy … others around the hypocrites were expecting to see a GODLY person … but were NOT actually seeing a godly person when they were doing whatever seemed right in their own eyes! However, those around these hypocrites often think that is how Christians behave, thus they were giving God a bad name! Scriptures make this perfectly clear when Paul wrote 1 Corithians! Here is the passage that I will end with:

I wrote you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people. 10 In no way did I mean the immoral people of this world, or the greedy and swindlers and idolaters, since you would then have to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who calls himself a Christian who is sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idolater, or verbally abusive, or a drunkard, or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person. 12 For what do I have to do with judging those outside? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 But God will judge those outside. Remove the evil person from among you. (1Corinthians 5:9-13 NET)

After watching the 1st Presidential debate, I was embarrassed … embarrassed for our country. The Republican candidate was  verbally abusive!  He abused the moderator. He abused his opponent. He abused US… those he is supposed to protect! Sexually immoral: four years ago a video was released that showed him openly speaking about groping and kissing women without their consent (NPR Access Hollywood 2005 Video Source). Greedy: he loves to brag about his riches, his empire. And he is accused of swindling and cheating. He brags about paying nothing in Federal taxes at the same time as the IRS has been constantly auditing him for years! And now that the New York Times has his tax returns they have confirmed that either he is one of the worst businessmen in the country or he is lying about all the millions of dollars that his companies have lost (which gave him tax deductions dropping his taxes down to $0 zero! In the 1st Presidential debate he called anyone in this country who paid their taxes without using every last loophole STUPID. For years I had a tax accountant do my taxes and my instructions to him were simple … no loopholes and no trying to cut taxes for anything at all questionable. I paid my taxes. I paid six times as much federal tax as the Republican candidate paid in 2016 and 2017 (when he paid just $750 each year – source: New York Times). The Scripture we just read together tells us that if he calls himself a Christian then we ARE to judge him. Not only that … we ARE TO REMOVE HIM FROM AMONG us.

There are many more reasons that a Christian should take pause before voting this year. God is not a Republican nor Democrat. Jesus did not have a one issue focus, but he did get rather upset with hypocrites. And we are to remove from among us anyone who is verbally abusive, sexually immoral, greedy and a swindler. I have tried to be extremely accurate in how I see some of the issues that a Christian would consider. Please let me know if you see flaws in what I wrote.

The Pro-Life Dilemma Solution

Whether you are conservative, moderate, or liberal (yes there ARE pro-life liberals) you may find yourself in a bit of a dilemma for this election. You want to vote pro-life, but the Republican candidate is someone you can’t vote for in good conscience.

Solution 1 (which many are considering) is to NOT vote at all.

Solution 2 is better. Vote for a pro-life candidate in the Constitution Party (which I have done at times in the past).

I think any pro-life voter will be THRILLED with the Constitution Party! Really, I am not joking! On the very front page of their platform is SANCTITY OF LIFE. It is extensive and includes this:

The pre-born child, whose life begins at fertilization, is a human being created in God’s image. The first duty of the law is to prevent the shedding of innocent blood. It is, therefore, the duty of all civil governments to secure and to safeguard the lives of the pre-born.

Yes, you CAN vote for the Constitution Party candidate (Don Blankenship). It is NOT a write-in vote!  And it is MUCH better than not voting at all! Hopefully this gives you another alternative to this election in addition to Republican, Democrat or NOT VOTING!

Jesus and Abortion (aka Murder)

Yes, abortion is terrible. I used to be a one issue voter myself and that was the issue! But then my eyes were opened and I could see more clearly (like scales fell off – source). Over the years it became clearly obvious that there are MANY MANY issues before us in this world, this country, this state, even just in my city! How could I have been deceived into thinking that just one issue was all that mattered, especially since Honoring and Glorifying God would of course be THE one issue, if there could only be one!

Over the past few weeks I remembered that Jesus is the way (see article by Steve Wiersum – photo above). What Jesus said matters. And I had thought that of course he was totally against abortion and it was number one on His list too! But I started going through Scriptures (starting in the gospel of Matthew) and looking at each statement Jesus made – categorizing it into one or two words (if possible). I did quite a few chapters of this and it wasn’t long before I realized that this project would take me months, if not years! (source) And then I discovered that someone else had already done what I had set out to do myself! So, I posted what I had done so far myself (What Jesus Said Matters) and ordered the book (The Greatest Words Ever Spoken; Everything Jesus Said About You, Your Life, and Everything Else). The book was great! It categorized the nearly 2,000 statements of Jesus into about 200 topics. The Table of Contents basically was a list of those topics, so one of the first things I did was to type out the Table of Contents so that I could search it for a topic that came to mind to let me quickly see what Jesus had to say about that topic! Then I posted it to help others decide if they wanted to buy the book – and then to help them search it just as easily – source).

Now … what I found was that Jesus never mentioned abortion or implied anything about it in any of his nearly 2,000 statements. Never. Does that mean he thought it was OK? As Paul said in Romans 3:4 and Romans 6:15, “Absolutely not“! But what about “murder” (if you equate abortion with murder). Surely Jesus had plenty to say about murder! Well … actually not. There were 36 topics that Jesus spoke about at least TWENTY TIMES. Murder was not one of those 36 … [however hypocrisy WAS!] So … how many times did Jesus talk about murder then? 15? 12? 10? 7? 4? 3? 2? Yes … TWICEand each time it was combined with other evils (thus we know that Jesus was not focusing on just one issue even when talking about murder). Once he spoke of murder in order to compare it to ANGER (which Jesus said was just as bad – Source). Jesus said these two things were subject to judgment (translations typically use the English word “murder”, but the other Greek word has a variety of translations, mostly revolving around “murder”):

  1. Murder, kill, slay – source
  2. Anger, harbors malice, enmity of heart, nurses anger against, lightly angry with his brother, angry with his brother without a cause, only angry even in your own home, angry with another believer, angry with a brother or sister, hold anger in your heart toward a fellow believer, angry with his brother unadvisedly, angry with his brother without have a good reason, wroth to his brother – source

The other time he was speaking of the things that make a man unclean, defiled, dishonored, contaminated, wrong, unacceptable to God, polluted, unholy or dirty (see Source – dozens of translations). And what were the SEVEN things that defile a man, making him unclean? (each of the seven includes the various ways the Greek word is translated – see Source)

  1. Evil thoughts, intentions, ideas
  2. Murder, killing, manslayings
  3. Adultery, unfaithfulness in marriage, sex sins of a married person, breaking of wedlock
  4. Sexual immorality, fornication, sexual vice, sexual sins, vulgar deeds, doing immoral things, lust, unchastity, sex sins of a person not married, whoredom, whoring
  5. Theft, stealing, robbing
  6. False testimony, false witness, lies, telling lies, lying, perjury, telling lies about others,
  7. Slander, blasphemies, railings, irreverent speech, insults, insulting others, insulting people, speaking evil of others, cursing come from within, saying bad things against other people, abusive speech, cussing, speaking against God, saying wrong things about people, evil speakings

I suggest using those two lists (of EIGHT things) when referring to someone or some group of people as evil, since Jesus lumped together all eight things in the two statements that include murder. Lying is right there, just as bad as Murder. So is stealing, speaking badly about others and even just evil thoughts, intentions or ideas! If this is hard to believe, I suggest praying that God would bring understanding to you. Pray that God would show you the meaning of these and other Scriptures.

UPDATE October 20, 2020: The website Holy Post has a rather in depth look at the “voting issue” of abortion. They posted a video about as well as a transcript. I think the transcript is far better because you can actually LOOK at it carefully! See for yourself => Abortion Video Transcript with Citations

HOWEVER … that said … the VIDEO is not very long but extremely well done. It explains things so well that my eyes were “glued to the screen” (so to speak). Take a look at the video now:

A Moral Christian Man of Faith

If you are a Christian, take care how you treat and speak about fellow Christians – your brothers and sisters. While I won’t cause divisions saying who to vote for, I can present some facts that you should consider and the first is of the two main candidates, which candidate has a solid faith, shows it, embraces it and weaves it into his everyday life??? Which of the candidates attends church regularly?

Of the two candidates I was able to confirm from many sources that Joe Biden is a Catholic (as was John F Kennedy – source) who not only attends church regularly, but makes his faith part of his every day life. CNN refers to Joe Biden as a Man of Faith (see preceding photo – source). Christianity Today reports that he has “an authentic faith” (source).

However, I am unable to say that about the other candidate. The church that he specified as his church said that he was not an active member and how he speaks and acts every day does not seem to match up with a  solid Christian life, but I can’t judge one way or the other.

However, I find it inappropriate for Christians to mock and make fun of Joe Biden with wild claims that he doesn’t believe the Bible or go to church or other nonsense. I hope that none of you are repeating such untruths about your brother in Christ, though I can see where you might have gotten this misinformation. The Religion News Service reports on claims made on August 6, 2020 by the opposing candidate: “If Biden were to become president, Trump said, there would be “no religion, no anything.” He claimed Biden would “hurt the Bible” and “hurt God.” Trump asserted that Biden was “against God.” ” That article (source), written four days later by a White House Staffer who knew and worked with Biden, continues with this:

As a White House staffer, I had the opportunity to see Vice President Biden up close. Trump’s assertions could not be more wrong. With these remarks, Trump has demonstrated once again that he doesn’t tell the truth and doesn’t understand faith, religion’s role in American public life, or Joe Biden.

After quite a bit of research, I can provide some facts and background to counter the lies that his opponent is spreading. This is from a September 20, 2020 NPR article (source):

When Joe Biden seeks to inspire or comfort, he turns to his faith. His speeches are woven with references to God, biblical language or the pope.

On Monday, the Democratic presidential nominee spoke to the faith-based anti-poverty group the Poor People’s Campaign, and described the United States under President Trump as a “nation in the wilderness.”

“All of you remind me of how Scripture describes a calling born out of the wilderness,” Biden told the virtual audience. “A calling to serve, not to be served. A calling toward justice, healing, hope — not hate. To speak the good news, and followed by some good deeds. It’s not just enough to speak the good news, but good deeds.”

This wasn’t a one-off religious reference; this is how Biden routinely speaks.

On August 31, The Independent had this to say about Joe Biden (source):

Joe Biden’s faith is at the core of who he is; he’s lived it with dignity his entire life, and it’s been a source of strength and comfort in times of extreme hardship

This is in contrast with the opposing candidate who cleared away peaceful protesters from in front of a church for a photo op holding up the Bible. On June 1, 2020, NPR reported on this incident and comments from the Episcopal bishop with responsibilities for that church (source):

“There was no reaching out, no sense that it would require some sort of authorization before using the church as a backdrop in that way,” said the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Episcopal bishop of Washington, with oversight responsibilities for the church. When the president held up the Bible, without praying or quoting a verse appropriate for the moment, Budde was further incensed. “It almost looked like a prop,” she told NPR. “That is the most sacred text of the Judeo-Christian tradition. It speaks messages of love, of God, love of neighbor. I was outraged that he felt that he had the license to do that, and that he would abuse our sacred symbols and our sacred space in that way.”

On August 10, 2020, the Religion News Service published an article about Joe Biden written by a White House staffer who worked with him and knew him well. The article includes this (source):

It’s what we Baptists call walking the talk. Biden speaks readily and movingly about his personal faith, including the duty to love one’s neighbor. But even more importantly, he lives out his faith on a daily basis. Biden is also a regular churchgoer. Even when Vice President Biden was on the road during the Obama-Biden administration, he would quietly find a church to attend. His focus was on worshipping, not on being seen doing so.

Conclusion: you may choose who you wish to vote for, but if you wish to vote for a solid Christian, I hope that what few references I have listed mean something to you!

What Jesus Said Matters 2

The Greatest Words Ever Spoken
– a book by Steven K Scott

This is a fantastic book, so I typed out the 8 page Table of Contents. Since categorizing the things Jesus said is a hard task and likely no two people would come up with exactly the same categorization of the nearly 2,000 statements made by Jesus (or even just the same list of categories) I thought that looking at how Steven Scott categorized them might help you decide to buy the book or not. If you’d like a copy of the book but your finances are tight, just contact me and I will gladly send you a copy (I already have an extra copy here at home to give out to anyone who drops by and is interested). Here is how I preface the Table of Contents to his book that I typed out:

There are over 1,900 things that Jesus said within Scriptures. This book attempts to categorize them into about 200 categories (some passages are just 1 verse while some are literally dozens of verses). Looking at this LONG list (while typing out the table of contents to the book) it was immediately obvious that Jesus did not have a ONE ISSUE focus (so neither should we!) But he did focus on some things more often, so I boldfaced the 36 topics that came up in things he said at least TWENTY TIMES. I will present these top 36 topics first, followed by the complete list of over 200 topics!

I am including a PDF of this that you can download and save for future reference … it is a long list, so having a digital copy will let you search for a topic)

Science and Religion (not at odds with each other)

I’m not sure why there seems to be such a dichotomy between science and religion. When both are viewed in proper context it seems that they actually go hand in hand! Right after I posted this article (within minutes) I saw an image taken from a presentation by Astrophysicist Jeff Zweerink at the Women in Apologetics Illuminate conference that actually sums up my article even better than what I wrote (so I will paste it here at the top with permission):

Next it was great to find a virtual kids science fair promoted by Women in Apologetics (again) and Reasons to Believe!

Looking for a fun, educational activity for your school-aged kids to do from home? How about a FREE, at-home science…

Posted by Women in Apologetics (At Home Science Fair) on Sunday, September 13, 2020

The science fair runs from September 13 through September 27, 2020, but the information and interesting science at home links are there for you beyond that! Just click on one of the science project links on the last page of their four page PDF to jump to a few of their suggested projects!

And science is not just kids stuff either. There are many great scientists who believed in God, such as Isaac Newton as well as Faraday, Boyle, Mandel, Copernicus and Pascal. It seems to me that science can often lead you to God or confirm what you already believe! You can find info about many great scientists like that from a variety of sources:

  1. 34 Great Scientists (famousscientists.org)
  2. 10 Famous Scientists (The Science Times)
  3. 23 Famous Scientists (Magis Center)
  4. 9 Groundbreaking Scientists (Relevant Magazine)
  5. 13 Famous Scientists (godandscience.org)
  6. 25 Famous Scientists (famousscientists.org)

But my favorite is a book that I have purchased multiple times (to give away) that compiles short essays from scientists in a wide variety of fields today, such as:

Why 50 scientists choose to believe in creation

  1. Biology
  2. Biochemistry
  3. Physics
  4. Genetics
  5. Mathematics
  6. Botany
  7. Geophysics
  8. Zoology
  9. Astronomy
  10. Hydrometallurgy

And so it puzzles me why some Christians have a hard time with science today, especially pertaining to the pandemic and especially wearing facemasks. PBS has a totally cool short video that explains the science behind them (and they have some very neat scientific gear too):

And it is also amazing (to me any way) how something so fundamental can be turned into a political issue, yet it has. Right leaning people tend to not want to wear masks (while in my mind they should be proponents of facemasks  since they protect OTHERS and not the one wearing them … thus placing others ahead of yourself as Scriptures advise ). Even one of the most recognized names in scientific magazines spoke out about this (Scientific American). One of my favorite tech and science magazines (Wired) also published an article about how the editor of Science magazine also is speaking out about this issue! The New York Times also reports on how a top federal official and his science advisor refused to accept the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s science assessment of the pandemic.

And so I end where I began … wondering why there is such a dichotomy between science and religion.

To the vicious be the opposite! Be kind, moral, virtuous, honorable and respectable!

Photo by Lean Leta on Pexels.com

If you are like me, you don’t like be around a vicious person and you definitely wouldn’t leave your children with them! You hope that your children would be just the opposite! I looked up the antonyms of vicious (including on  Word Hippo) and found that the opposite of vicious encompasses many wonderful characteristics. You likely want your children to have these characteristics that are the opposite of vicious… to be honorable, respectable, considerate, decent, compassionate, comforting and kind. As a Christian I also want them be moral, pure,  and virtuous. And, yes, many of my friends may not be Christian and they ARE and STRIVE TO BE virtuous, pure and moral. But Scriptures do tell Christians to be ALL these things that are the opposite of vicious! Yes … All these characteristics are the opposite of vicious (you may check your own antonym source to find even more).

But then (you may be thinking) who would even WANT to be vicious? Surely not anyone in our community, especially our leaders. And you hopefully also are thinking that you wouldn’t support a vicious person as a leader for your city, state or country! And so, you may be just as shocked as I was that a candidate actually publicly stated that it was his GOAL to be vicious.

But this is the word we live in now. When you hear the Republican candidate say something like this, do you cheer him or walk away?

Now I can be really vicious,” he said to roars of approval from the crowd. (click=> source)

As Christians, we’d see how Scriptures tell us to live contrary to vicious! The Scripture that popped out to me was one that many know (and even memorized):

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (Galatians 5:22-23 NLT)

Yes, as Christians, Scriptures tell us to respect authority, and so I do … both the Mayor of my city and the Governor of my State, as well as the President. But Scriptures also tell us to sit and reason… we should test what we see… test what we hear… check if it matches up with Scriptures! And Scriptures also CLEARLY tell us that sometimes God can even remove a leader, as Scriptures tell us regarding Saul as well as Jeroboam and Solomon.

Then Ahijah laid hold of the new garment that was on him, and tore it into twelve pieces. And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon and will give you ten tribes (but he shall have one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city that I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel) (1Kings 11:30-32 ESV)

and

And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” (1Samuel 13:13-14 ESV)

For what does God expect of leaders that he appoints over countries? He wants leaders that “listen to all that I command you, and will walk in my ways, and do what is right in my eyes by keeping my statutes and my commandments” (1Kings 11:38 ESV).

Walk in God’s ways.

Vicious is not how I see our God.

  1. Clothe yourself in Christ (Galatians 3:27).
  2. Clothe yourself in Righteousness (Isaiah 61:10).
  3. Clothe yourself with Humility (1Peter 5:5).
  4. Clothe yourself with Honor (Job 40:10).
  5. Clothe yourself with the Armor of Light (Romans 13:12).
  6. Clothe yourself with Truth (Ephesians 6:14).
  7. Clothe yourself with Dignity (Proverbs 31:25).
  8. And clothe yourself with Compassion, Kindness, Gentleness and Patience (Colossians 3:12).

Mission Impeccable

Good Day and Good Evening friends. Inside the envelope next to this tape recorder you will find lists of places where you have influence, be it at work or school, biking, walking or shopping, or even via phone, text message or Facebook posts, wherever you encounter other people all made in the image of God. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to be kind. Not just kind, but the most kind person you meet today. This may seem impossible (rather than impeccable) but you will not be in it alone, for God is there with you every step of the way, even carrying you when you are too overwhelmed to go on. Remember that all things are possible with God. Also included in the envelope is your daily (or even hourly) checklist to help you in this mission. As you go about your day keep an index card with this checklist in your pocket or purse to help you choose what to say or do:

  1. Is it kind?
  2. Is it encouraging?
  3. Is it uniting?

As always, should you or any of your Impeccable Mission Force be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This tape will self destruct in 5 seconds. God be with you my friend… <fizzle, smoke, poof>

Fizzle, Smoke, Poof

I think this is a right now word for each of us today. And as is often the case when I hear a word, sometimes I have to look up the word in the dictionary. Perhaps some of you are literary challenged like me, so I can save you time by sharing what I found when looking it up in my Merriam Webster Dictionary app on my phone:

Wow … that sounds like a good category for a new mission! Well, actually, this is not the first time I have heard this “right now” word. Some of you may recall back a decade when I was sure that I was hearing this word (it is a link to my post about it):

Click=> Kindness is a Potent Weapon

And then, another interesting aspect of the word today is that it is confirming the prior time I heard it and shared it on my website that is name:

Click=> Accepted Not Rejected

And look at what the Sub-Title of the website has always been for all these years:

No matter what the world may say, you are indeed accepted, not rejected!

And that ties in with the message from our Pastor on Sunday, when he told us how we might not be accepted by doing what God is asking of us, but to do it anyway (God’s ideas are usually better than our own … well, actually they ALWAYS are!).

Why is this important for today? Well, as our Pastor said (much better than I can)… the world around us is in a mess. People are siding with one party or the other and are fighting each other, when NEITHER party is the solution. The solution is with God… with Jesus! So, we need to side with God, with Jesus and not a political party. And it also is important for today because it reminds us that our battle is not against other people, but against the powers of darkness. Our weapons are not worldly weapons. And besides all that … Scriptures actually includes one of my favorite stories that was so nicely portrayed by Amber as the Title Page art for the Handwritten Bible book of 2 Kings (and this title page was the ONLY title page that was actually TWO pages):

Click=> 2 Page Title Page for 2 Kings

Here are those two pages with the story of how KINDNESS won the battle (reference is 2Kings 6:8-23):

Notice the words in the second to last panel:

Be nice to them. Give them something to eat…

And the words in the final panel:

That kindness was remembered a long time…

Our mission when encountering others today (who may be in anguish, or overwhelmed with sorrow) is not to beat them on the head to  **WIN** and show them how wrong they are (or actually, how we perceive them to be wrong). Odds, are that we may be just as wrong as them, and we both need God, need Jesus. So instead of beating them over the head, why not shower kindness over their heads, similar to what Paul spoke about to the Romans (12:20-21 ESV):

To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

But what is even more interesting is what comes just before those verses (I will space it out like a list, which it really is):

Love must be sincere.
Hate what is evil;
cling to what is good.
Be devoted to one another in love.
Honor one another above yourselves.
Never be lacking in zeal, but
keep your spiritual fervor,
serving the Lord.
Be joyful in hope,
patient in affliction,
faithful in prayer.
Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.
Practice hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you;
bless and do not curse.
Rejoice with those who rejoice;
mourn with those who mourn.
Live in harmony with one another.
Do not be proud, but
be willing to associate with people of low position.
Do not be conceited.
Do not repay anyone evil for evil.
Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you,
live at peace with everyone. (Romans 12:9-18 NIV)

God be with you my friend… <fizzle, smoke, poof>

I paused in my project when I found the book “The Greatest Words Ever Spoken” by Steven Scott. He categorizes everything Jesus said into 200 categories in a 519 page book (which I have with me next to my computer!)

Another person (Josh) put together several website pages that list everything that Jesus said, book by book, similar to what I am doing… but not quite … I am trying to be a bit more granular, more to specific verses and what Jesus was saying, sentence by sentence, verse by verse while Josh was grouping his sentences by paragraphs (so to speak). But here is his summary: What Jesus said in the book of Matthew
